Title: Reflecting

Year Completed: 1988

Size: H71” × W54.5” / H181 cm × W139 cm

Material: old silk (obi, kimono), old cotton (sarasa), corduroy

Statement: At this time I usually returned to Japan only once a year, during the summer, so at other times I often felt nostalgic about Japan. However, once here, things were were often quite difficult and I would begin to think about New York with equally warm feelings.

This symbolizes the Japanese part of my life, born and raised in Kyoto, where I lived until I went to America. The image comes from seeing roofs of temples against a wide sky.
